John Quinn

John is an award-winning artist whose work is rooted in technical precision and genuine care for the people he tattoos. Every piece begins with a conversation: understanding the meaning behind the work, the story it tells, and the person who will carry it.
Specialising in black and grey realism, fine line work, custom design and cover ups, John brings a meticulous eye for detail and a deep respect for the art form to every session at the Newcastle studio.

How We Work
Consultation
Every piece begins with a conversation. Understanding your vision, the meaning behind the work, and how it fits your body is the foundation of a great tattoo. Consultations at our Newcastle studio are always free.
Design
Custom artwork is drawn specifically for you. No generic flash, no rushing. The design is refined until it feels right; this is collaborative work between you and your tattoo artist.
Execution
Clean technique, precise linework, and careful attention to detail. The goal is a tattoo that looks exceptional on day one and for years to come.
Common Questions
FAQs about getting tattooed at Tattoo Zone
How long has John Quinn been tattooing in Newcastle?
Over 25 years. John has been a professional tattoo artist for more than two and a half decades and runs Tattoo Zone in Byker as the studio he built around that experience.
Is John actually award-winning, or is that just marketing?
It is genuine, like. John is an award-winning tattoo artist whose work has been recognised across the North East. Awards are not the reason to book in, the work is, but if you're looking for proof of consistency over the long haul, the recognition is there.
Will John tattoo me himself, or will it be passed to someone else?
John tattoos every client at Tattoo Zone himself. The person you sit down with at consultation is the same person who tattoos you. We don't pass clients between artists.
Where exactly is the studio? Is it easy to get to from town?
We're at 8 Byker Bridge, NE1 2NS. A few minutes' walk from the city centre, the Quayside and the Ouseburn. Manors and Byker Metro are both close by. If you're driving, there's limited on-street parking nearby.
Can I just pop in for a chat without booking?
Aye, you can pop by during opening hours and we'll happily talk through an idea if John's free. That said, full consultations are best booked in advance so you get proper time, references on the desk, and a written quote at the end.
Do you tattoo people travelling in from outside Newcastle?
All the time. We get clients in from across the North East: Gateshead, Sunderland, Durham, Northumberland and further afield. If you're travelling, we'll do the consultation by video call so you only need to make one trip.
What if my idea is a bit daft? Will you tell us straight?
Yes, honestly. Part of the job is steering clients away from ideas that won't age well, won't fit the placement, or won't read at the size they want. We'll always suggest a version that will work, rather than just nodding through something we know will let you down in five years.
How far ahead do I need to book?
Smaller pieces can sometimes be slotted in within a couple of weeks. Larger custom realism work, sleeves and cover ups usually book a few months out. Send your idea through and we'll give you a realistic timeline.
Do you do walk-in tattoos?
We aren't a walk-in studio. Every tattoo at Tattoo Zone is custom designed for the client, so even a small piece needs a quick consultation first. It only takes ten minutes and you get something genuinely yours, not a flash sheet stencil.
