How to Prepare for Your Tattoo Session: A Newcastle Studio Checklist

Most tattoo problems start before you sit in the chair. The checklist we give clients before a session at our Newcastle studio.

By John Quinn ·

Most tattoo problems start before you sit in the chair. Tired clients with empty stomachs are the leading cause of long, painful sessions. This is the pre-session checklist we hand every client booking tattoos in Newcastle at our studio.

The week before

  • Stay hydrated. Skin takes ink better when it is properly hydrated. Drink water normally all week, not just the morning of.
  • Avoid sunburn. A burned area cannot be tattooed. Keep the planned tattoo area out of direct sun for at least a week.
  • Skip the heavy gym days on the limb being tattooed in the 48 hours before.
  • Sleep. The single biggest factor in how long you can sit comfortably is rest. Aim for two solid nights before the session.

The day before

  • Do not drink alcohol. Alcohol thins the blood, which makes the tattoo bleed more during the session and heal worse afterwards. We will not tattoo you if you turn up drunk or hungover.
  • Avoid blood thinners. Aspirin, ibuprofen, very high-dose fish oil. Paracetamol is fine.
  • Eat a proper dinner. Real food, not a snack.

The morning of

  • Eat a real breakfast with some protein. Sugar alone will spike then crash you mid-session.
  • Shower and shave the area we are tattooing if you can do so easily. If not, leave it and we will sort it at the studio.
  • Wear something practical. Loose clothing that gives access to the area being tattooed without you having to half-undress in the studio. Dark colours, in case of ink splatter.
  • Bring snacks and water for longer sessions. Sweet snacks are useful as a quick boost mid-session.
  • Charge your phone or bring a book. You will be sitting still for hours.

What to skip

  • Numbing cream you have bought online: it can affect how the skin takes ink. We will discuss numbing in advance if you need it.
  • Caffeine overload. A normal coffee is fine; three is not.
  • Last-minute design changes. The artwork is locked at consultation, not on the day.

What we provide

Sterile equipment, single-use needles, gloves and aftercare cream are all part of your session. We will wrap your tattoo before you leave and walk you through the routine, which is also written up in our tattoo aftercare guide.

If something is not right on the day

If you wake up unwell, tell us before you travel. Rescheduling is easy; tattooing on top of a fever is a bad idea. We will move your slot without drama.
